LEAD-UP INTERNATIONAL’S WORKSHOPS
Lead-Up uses a combination of non-verbal communication and equine-assisted therapy to teach youth skill sets that can be used in any situation. We partner with NGOs that strive to improve the welfare of youth at risk (aged 15-24) to prevent violence, improve gender equality and improve equine welfare. The participants are welcomed into a compassionate and non-judgmental environment, far removed from the violence, abuse, addiction and neglect they often experience at home. Lead-Up’s objectives are attitudinal and behavioral change resulting in the reduction of violence used to solve inter-personal conflicts (i.e., domestic violence, youth violence, and intra-familiar violence).
A Lead-Up workshop takes place over two full-days, and includes a feedback session as well. Participants are taught non-verbal communication skills to control body language, breathing and emotions when interacting with horses. Within minutes of a participant demonstrating calm and assertive leadership through non-verbal communication the horse willingly chooses his leadership and walks toward him; the moment of ‘Join-Up®.’
Join-Up is the non-violent horse training approach discovered by Monty Roberts (the real life Horse Whisperer). Join-Up is based on a consistent set of principles using the horse’s inherent methods of communication and herd behavior. Horses are herd animals that seek leadership. In Join-Up we communicate non-violently and non-verbally with the horses in their language and they choose us as their leader.
Join-Up is a powerful and life-changing experience. These new non-verbal communication skills are then related to the participants’ lives. Clinical psychologists are on hand at every step and further coaching and therapy is provided for the youth who need special attention.
