The Monty Roberts International Learning Center also offers the certification courses below. The curriculum offers students predictable, discernible, and effective tools to communicate with horses using their own natural language, forming a partnership based on trust and communication rather than dominance. Included in your sign up is a year’s subscription to ‘Monty’s Equus Online University.’ This online learning tool will give you a great start prior to the course and a greater idea of what you will be learning and doing in the round pen during your course. And the ongoing education that you will have with the Uni will give you great practice and exercises to continue with at home while working towards your exams.

The Introductory and Advanced courses provide a strong foundation in Monty's methods. They are valuable in their own right, but are also part of the process to become an Instructor.

The Introductory course can be completed with any of our Certified Instructors worldwide. Some teach it in different formats, but the content and qualification are the same. For some students, the Introductory course provides all of the skill they need to be successful with their horses. For those who want to further their skills, or become professionals in the industry, the next step is the Advanced course, which can only be completed at Flag Is Up Farms in California.

Monty will be present for the Advanced Exams. After successful completion of the exams, students who show potential to become Instructors will be invited to complete an Internship, which is the final stage in becoming an Instructor.

The internship consists of a minimum of three months here at Flag Is Up Farms. Accommodation is provided and there are no fees for this stage, but you are responsible for your own living costs. You will work as part of the MRILC team, continue to improve your skills with project horses and learn how to teach the courses. Monty and the resident Instructors will support and assess you throughout your stay, and if they are satisfied with your progress, you will become a Certified Instructor. Instructors are qualified to teach Horsemanship 101, Join-Up and Long-lining clinics, as well as the Introductory course.

INTRODUCTORY COURSE

The Introductory Course is the first step to gain an in-depth understanding of Monty’s concepts. Students from various equine backgrounds are welcome to take part, as there are no prerequisites. To those of you with little or no horse knowledge, we recommend prior participation in the H101 Clinic.

The Introductory Course is designed to provide you with a well-rounded knowledge in the basics of horse care, performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition, with a strong emphasis on horse psychology. As the foundation of Monty’s work and a prerequisite for the Advanced Course, you will learn the method of Join-Up® as it relates to various environments. You will have the opportunity to build your skills in Dually™ halter work, long-lining, herding exercises and loading.

Initially you will spend two weeks at the MRILC. Classroom discussion will focus on horse evolution, behavior, sensory systems and language. Also covered are learning theory and, of course, Monty's methods. Through demonstrations and practical sessions you will learn about Join-Up, Dually halter work, long-lining, and trailer loading.

Following this you will return home to continue practicing what you have learned. By sending us videos you can continue to receive our feedback on your work. It is also during this period that you study theory on horse performance, breeding, feeding and nutrition. When we determine that you are ready, you will return for practical and written exams, at the successful completion of which you will graduate from the Introductory Course.

Included in the cost of the course is a year's subscription to Monty's Equus Online University. This online learning tool will support your continuing education in Monty's methods

ADVANCED COURSE

The Advanced Course offers students the opportunity to extend their knowledge to training both un-started and untouched horses. This course is the next step on the pathway towards becoming a qualified Instructor and to attend the Advanced Course you must be a graduate of the Introductory Course.

You will be given the tools to expand your knowledge and overall experience in Monty’s concepts. The emphasis here is on practical work and the goal is to develop in you the mindset of a horse trainer. You will gentle wild or untouched horses, introducing them to being handled, haltered and led.

Another group of horses will go through the starting process: initial trust building and desensitizing, followed by introducing the tack and long-lining. Throughout you will be encouraged to read each horse and respond appropriately, adjusting your approach for each individual and dealing with problems as they arise.

Following the initial three-week class, you will return home to practice and continue to learn via video feedback. When ready, you may return for an intense two weeks of written and practical exams, at the successful completion of which you will graduate from the Advanced Course.

Included in the cost of the course is a year's subscription to Monty's Equus Online University. This online learning tool will support your continuing education in Monty's methods.
